NEW DELHI: A day after the Delhi School Education (Fee Determination and Transparency in Regulation) Bill, 2025 was passed by majority vote in the Assembly, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the legislation would open the doors of private schools to children from all economic backgrounds, including those from underprivileged families.
Speaking on Saturday, CM Gupta stated, “Private schools came up in Delhi because previous governments failed to build enough quality government schools. Our aim is to ensure children from every section of society can study in these schools without parents being burdened by excessive fees.”
Strong Opposition from AAP
Former Education Minister and senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia sharply criticized the Bill, calling it “an open assault on the pockets of parents.”
Sisodia alleged that the BJP government is granting private schools the power to increase fees without checks, and claimed that the new law restricts both the government and the courts from intervening in such matters. “This leaves parents completely defenceless against exploitation,” he said.
The Bill, which sparked heated debate in the Assembly, is expected to significantly impact school fee regulation in Delhi, with supporters arguing it promotes inclusivity, while critics warn it could lead to unchecked fee hikes.
