ICICI Bank Hikes Minimum Balance for New Savings Accounts to ₹50,000

Bank in India

MUMBAI: Private sector lender ICICI Bank has significantly increased the minimum average balance (MAB) requirement for its new savings bank accounts opened on or after August 1, 2025, raising it fivefold to ₹50,000 for urban branches.

Previously, the MAB for savings accounts was ₹10,000. As per the bank’s website, the revised MAB for semi-urban locations has been set at ₹25,000, while rural branches will now require an MAB of ₹10,000.

For customers failing to maintain the required MAB, the bank will levy a penalty of 6% of the shortfall or ₹500, whichever is lower.

The changes apply only to new savings accounts opened on or after August 1, 2025. Existing account holders will continue with the earlier MAB structure.

Exemptions
The increased balance requirement does not apply to salary accounts, PM Jan Dhan Yojana accounts, or basic savings bank deposit accounts, which remain zero-balance accounts.

This sharp hike in MAB is expected to impact customers opening new accounts in urban and semi-urban areas, while rural customers will see a smaller increase.
