Animal Rights Activists Detained During Protest Against Supreme Court’s Stray Dog Relocation Order

Stray Dogs in India to be removed

Animal rights activists staged a protest at Connaught Place on Tuesday against the Supreme Court’s order directing that stray dogs be relocated from streets to shelter homes within eight weeks.

The demonstration led to a scuffle between the protesters and the police, following which around 15 activists were detained. “They did not seek prior permission from the police,” an officer stated.

Separately, police registered a case against activists who had protested near India Gate on Monday in opposition to the same court order. The FIR, accessed by The Educated World, does not name any individuals.

The case has been filed under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (offence of disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant). “We had instructed the protesters not to assemble at India Gate, but they ignored the directive and staged the protest. When we tried to disperse them, they manhandled our staff, and some even pushed our female constables,” the officer added.
