In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s August 11 direction to relocate stray dogs in Delhi-NCR, an urgent mentioning was made on Wednesday evening regarding authorities picking up community dogs before the official order was uploaded.
Advocate-on-Record (AOR) Garima Sharma informed the bench of CJI BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran that, despite the order not yet appearing on the Supreme Court’s website, local bodies had already begun relocation drives. “In West Delhi, the strays were picked up at 12 o’clock,” she told the court. CJI Gavai responded, “I am looking into it.”
According to the Supreme Court’s website, the August 11 order remains unpublished. Earlier in the day, another stray dog–related matter was also mentioned before the CJI for urgent listing.
That petition—filed by the organisation Conference for Human Rights (India) in 2024—challenges a Delhi High Court order in a PIL seeking sterilisation and vaccination of community dogs as per the Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules.
On August 11, a bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan had directed authorities in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad to immediately pick up stray dogs from all localities and shift them to shelters. The bench took suo motu cognisance of a Times of India report claiming that a six-year-old girl had died due to dog bites.
