August 14, 2025: At least 30 people, including two Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel, have died and over 100 are missing after a massive cloudburst struck Chositi village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on Thursday, triggering flash floods and large-scale destruction.

The incident occurred in Chasoti, the last motorable village on the route to the Machail Mata shrine, leading to the immediate suspension of the annual pilgrimage. Authorities have launched an extensive rescue and relief operation, mobilising police, Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams to the site.

Officials on the Ground
Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Sharma and Senior Superintendent of Police Naresh Singh are on their way to the disaster-hit area to oversee operations. “Massive rescue operations have been started in the area,” Sharma confirmed. The flash floods have swept through several homes in the densely populated foothill hamlet, leaving widespread damage.

Leaders React
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the tragedy, posting on X:

“Anguished by cloudburst in Chositi Kishtwar. Condolences to bereaved families & prayers for quick recovery of injured. Directed Civil, Police, Army, NDRF & SDRF officials to strengthen rescue & relief operations and ensure all possible assistance is provided to the affected.”

Union Minister Jitendra Singh said he had spoken with the Deputy Commissioner and confirmed the administration’s rapid response.

“A massive cloudburst in Chositi area, which could result in substantial casualty. Administration has immediately swung into action, rescue team has left for the site,” he posted on X.

Local Concerns
Leader of Opposition Sunil Kumar Sharma said initial reports indicate the damage could be extensive. “At the moment, I don’t think anyone has exact figures, but I believe there could be significant damage in the area. Due to the ongoing yatra, the area is congested,” he noted.

Authorities continue to search for survivors as rain and difficult terrain hamper rescue efforts.
