The Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has launched an inquiry into the death of a newborn who reportedly fell from a phototherapy bed at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
The infant, born on August 15, was undergoing treatment for jaundice when the incident occurred. Hospital staff discovered the baby hanging from the railing of the phototherapy bed around 5:30 p.m. on Monday. The newborn was declared dead shortly afterward.
Describing the episode as an “unfortunate and painful incident,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said strict action would follow if negligence on the part of medical staff is established.
Meanwhile, the child’s father, Utpal Bordoloi, announced that he would file a police complaint and pursue legal action over the tragedy.
