A deaf-mute woman was allegedly gang-raped in Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh, after being chased by two bike-borne men, police said on Wednesday.
The incident, captured on CCTV, helped police identify and arrest the accused — Harshit Pandey and Ankur Verma — following an encounter. Both men have confessed to the crime during preliminary interrogation, according to Balrampur Superintendent of Police Vikas Kumar.
The woman’s brother lodged a complaint at Kotwali Dehat police station on Monday, stating she was attacked while returning from her maternal uncle’s house. CCTV footage shows her, barefoot, being chased on a dimly lit, deserted road.
Police said the victim was sent for a medical examination and is receiving treatment. “Special teams have been formed to expedite the investigation,” SP Kumar said, adding that the route was inspected and video evidence collected.
