The government has announced a fresh capital expenditure plan worth nearly ₹47,000 crore to strengthen state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL)’s telecom network, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) said in a post on social media platform X on Thursday.
Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, quoted in the DoT’s post, noted that the company had already achieved its highest-ever capital outlay of ₹25,000 crore in 2023–24, which was used to install one lakh towers for 4G mobile services.
A consortium led by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) executed a major share of that ₹25,000-crore project, supplying telecom equipment and solutions for BSNL’s network expansion.
Scindia, while outlining the new ₹47,000-crore investment plan, reiterated the need for BSNL to improve its financial performance by raising its average revenue per user (ARPU).
The move comes as BSNL aims to accelerate its network modernisation and competitive positioning in India’s telecom market, with a long-term goal of progressing towards 5G deployment.
