India Backs Planned Trump–Putin Summit in Alaska, Offers Support for Ukraine Peace Efforts

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said it “endorsed” the proposed summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15, calling it a potential step toward ending the conflict in Ukraine. The meeting could also influence the course of U.S. tariffs imposed on India.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India stood ready to support diplomatic efforts aimed at peace in Ukraine.

“We issued a statement welcoming the understanding between the United States and the Russian Federation for a meeting in Alaska on India Endorses Planned Trump–Putin Summit in Alaska, Offers Support for Ukraine Peace Efforts. This meeting holds the promise of bringing to an end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and opening up the prospects of peace, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said on several occasions that ‘it is not an era of war’. India therefore endorses the upcoming summit and stands ready to support these efforts,” Mr. Jaiswal said.

On broader ties with Washington, Mr. Jaiswal added that India–U.S. relations would advance on the basis of “mutual respect and shared interests.”
